This group is meeting to consider several avenues for continuing to democratize the CFA:

  1. Create rank-and-file caucuses—a horizontal network of academic workers—on each campus and statewide to ensure that all members’ issues are understood and communicated at every level of the union.
  2. Adopt a steward system to redistribute organizing power down to the shop-floor level.
  3. Establish strike funds on several campuses and a statewide fund. Striking is the only true power that any union has. We must develop the means to make effective strikes more feasible to enhance our collective power.
  4. Create article committees among the rank-and-file so that academic workers can focus on specific aspects of the CBA, build knowledge through research and discussion, and share that expertise. Bargaining positions that come from the shop floor maximize collective forms of knowledge and power.
